Abstract
The purpose of this study is to classify the psychological and social variables which have negative effects during the parentification of adolescents and college students, and to undertake a comprehensive analysis of their effect sizes. To do this, this study conducted a meta-analysis of 52 studies published in Korea between 2003 and 2019 on the topic of the negative effect of parentification in adolescents and college students in terms of psychological and social variables(k=260). The effect size of each variable group was calculated and compared by classifying the variables negatively affected by parentification into psychological and social variable groups, and then meta-ANOVA analysis was conducted to verify the heterogeneity of the calculated effect size. Our results showed that, firstly, the overall effect size of the negative effects on psychological and social variables according to the sub-factor of parentification had the following effect sizes, respectively, Unfairness, Emotional Parentification and Physical Parentification. Second, the middle effect size appeared in the order of Unfairness, Emotional Parentification, and Physical Parentification in the Psychological variable group¡¯s ¡°Negative Self-Image¡±, ¡°Maladaptive Emotion Regulation and Expression¡±, ¡°Experience of Negative Emotions¡±. Third, The middle effect size appeared in the order of Unfairness, Emotional Parentification, and Physical Parentification in the Social variable group¡¯s ¡°Interpersonal Problem¡±. Lastly, as a result of the moderating effect test we conducted, the age of the study subjects showed statistically significant differences only in the psychological variable group of which Physical Parentification had a negative effect. This study systematically and comprehensively analyzed and presented the variables which parentification have a negative impact upon. Through this, the direction and goals of further research related to parentification were proposed and basic data were also provided in order to advance effective therapeutic interventions.
